And then there was The One - 1984 on the road to find out

The very first ‘weed seeds’ that came to me was in late 1970 from an associate of the BOEL (Brotherhood of Eternal Love) which had been sourced by the hash smugglers working in the Kandahar Province located near the Pakistan border in Southern Afghanistan.

I was given about 20 seeds and being 19 the idea of growing a weed plant was not in the cards as I was drafted into the US Army in early 1971 and the biggest concern was staying out of the Republic of Vietnam was the goal of many draftees to say the least.

Fast forward to December 1976 and the first Thai Sticks arrived in Laguna Beach. Sinsemilia wasn’t a ‘thing’ yet and wouldn’t be until 1978 from domestic growers in Northern California. I collected over 200 seeds from the bales of Thai sticks which arrived in 10 kg packs. 8 kg were ‘sticks’ and the other 2 kg were loose Thai buds - untied Thai buds that were quickly named ‘Buddha Buds’ in order to generate sales to cannabis connoisseurs in and around Southern California.

In 1983 the breeding began to create a Thai-dominant hybrid and using the Kandahar Indica for ‘canopy control’ as was being practiced in the PNW where indoor growing was a big focus and the ‘indoor garden’ was the buzzword. In fact the first 5 grow stores in the USA were located in Seattle & Portland.

In early 1984 I had created 10 plants that I felt were worthy of consideration. This group included a (very) Thai dominant F1 to the other end of the spectrum with a Kandahar Indica dominant F1 plant.

Since I had done the actual work I choose the first plant which had the most Thai sativa expressions. The plants were lined up against a wall in my living room and associates were there to get the plants that had been promised to them.

I grabbed my plant and moved it across the room and said something like “The one over here is mine. You guys figure out who gets what and that is what happened. Most of these people were out of my life once and for all. Only 2 of them remained in my circle of friends and associates.

“So you’ve got ‘the one’?” After a lot of laughter it was soon over and I went on with my life. I kept this plant since doing the ‘mother-clone’ deal and have continued for over 38 years.
